REVIEW - A New Kind of Christian

By daniel | April 8, 2005

Fabulous book. Fabulous. Premise of the book is that western christianity has lost itself in modernity, and the coming and it-is-here-now-ness of postmodernity and has taken away the power of the modernized church. Thus the church must be in a form that can reach to the postmodern world, of which there is no form currently.

Two of my favorite thoughts from the book. Numero Uno: We currently have an us-them approach to unbelievers. I don't see this approach in Christ. At all. He sat and talked with them, perhaps even preferring their company to that of the religious. He never pointed out that they were on the outside of something that he was on the inside of. Not once. Neither did his disciples, come to think of it. He (and they) only offered to them that there was a different life now available — the life of God Himself.

Numero Dos: The way we interpret the Bible is majorly skewed by the modern mindset.  The Biblical writers did not write a textbook, but wrote the stories and letters to be passed down.  Also in our heads is this idea of God is in control — which is definitely true, but the Biblical writers had never seen a car or a machine, from whence we get our ideas about control.  Their best ideas of control most likely involve parent/child relationships, etc.  Think about that.  Very interesting.

Summary: This book will make you think, and it's an easy read.  Go get it!
