REVIEW - The Last Word and the Word after That

By daniel | May 20, 2005

This book gives me an interesting predicament for a review.  Let me explain.  The best words of explanation are given in a quote attributed to Walter Breuggemann - “We should take the same care in teaching theology that we do in teaching sex education.  First, never teach the student more than they are ready to handle.  Second, never teach them something they will have to unlearn later.”  This rings so true to me, as one's view of God and what they are taught about God will radically alter their life for good or worse, even moreso than the powerful effects of correct or incorrect learnings on important topics such as sex.

Don't get me wrong.  This is an excellent book.  It's not going to be over on the left in my recommended reading list, though.  Not everyone is probably ready for it.  It requires being in a certain place to benefit from it.  Not a necessarily more advanced place or anything — you just need to be able to have your views on hell shaken up a bit to handle the book, cause that it will do.  So, I'll say for a summary, if you can trust in Jesus even if you don't know what you believe about hell, then this book is great, go for it.  If you can't, then this book won't be a very good use of your time.

Good luck, and I really like that Brueggemann quote — probably my favorite part of the book!
