Done for Christ
By daniel | August 18, 2005
Only one life, 'twill soon be past– Only what's done for Christ will last.
Now, at the risk of being called (or BEING) a “deeper-lifer” - I'd like to suggest that this oft-quoted line is misleading. I think what you come away with from hearing this is that you simply ought to go “do for Christ.” I'd like to suggest that it should be said, truly, there is one life soon enough gone, but only what's done IN Christ will last. (I'd also say the prepositions BY and THROUGH would work as well).
See, when I read the gospels, I don't get this idea that Jesus is asking me to do stuff for him. I get the picture that he wants me to follow him and do what He's doing WITH Him. I see Him asking us to replace our life with His, to benefit from His sacrifice by taking Him as our source. I don't think listening for the Spirit, versus “doing for Christ” is too complex a life to insist a believer have. In fact, I think if we're looking to do FOR Christ, we might consider what He wants done — renewing the world (including his people) THROUGH their relationship with Him.
