The Answer to All Practical Questions
By daniel | October 3, 2005
Last night, we discussed a story from John 12 where Mary anoints Jesus' feet, and Jesus says it's better than having given the [lots of] money to the poor, because the poor would always be around. This is true. The poor will always be with us, most likely despite the [noble] attempts of the One Campaign, etc. But this makes me think — Jesus seemed to really care about doing good for the poor, but here he seems to give worship a higher priority! Which is it?
Ok. See the pattern my thinking is leading into? Jesus offers two good things to consider, each frequently, and sometimes one more importantly than the other — but I want an absolute answer. I want a rule to always follow.
This is an… immature… approach to practical things. For any given choice of “what to do” in my life, there are a thousand good choices. My wife and I both have sat in the car together countless times, wondering what to do about this or that, and the answer is always the same — “be led by the Spirit.” In the end, there is never a rule that will always let you discern between better and best. We do have some simple guidelines on what is absolute sin, but when wanting to follow Jesus, you must be led by the Spirit.
