A Father's Mandates
By daniel | November 10, 2005
We watched a video call "Growing Kids God's Way" probably 6-12 months ago, and Virgil took these notes from the video in my notebook. I meant to give them back to him, but I forgot and found them today. These are pretty much directly from the video, and the teacher, Gary Ezzo:
- Cultivate a sense of family identity and belonging (Verbally announce to your kids what a great family they have. Silence says apathy. Know where you're going with your family identity.)
- Make an ongoing demonstration of love for your wife (What they see here will define how they can trust you.)
- Understand and respect children's private world (Their private world is on the inside. One must be invited in. When invited, just don't go to fix things, but listen.)
- Give your children the freedom to fail (They must know that I view their failure-with-effort as the first step toward success. They must not fear failing me.)
- Be the encourager of the family (More than occasional praise, but a demeanor. ie, lunchbox notes frequently, special occasion cards, give kids a chance to prove themselves trustworthy.)
- Learn to guard your tongue and tone, to measure response against excitement on your kis' faces
- Be sure to make lots of good physical contact. Mom's arms are comforting, dad's arms are strong and secure
- Build the trusting relationship with kids on the teachings of Jesus
