Waiting for Jesus to Return

By daniel | December 23, 2005

…how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

We talk a lot about the big story, or at least we should.  The part of the big story we find ourselves in is as part of the church, laboring to bring the world into right relationship with God, to make everything new.  The context of this part of the story, though, is not so cheery.  This world is a dark place.  I would say that it seems like it's getting darker, but I haven't been around enough to say that for sure, and some really terrible things have happened in the past.

The Thessalonians were praised by Paul for their expectancy of Jesus' return.  Jesus' return will mark the end of all things wrong and the beginning of all things being right.  Kind of like the final stroke of the pen, or the stapling together of the manuscript.  I do find myself anticipating this final redemption more as I look at the broken state of the world.

Jesus giving the final word of judgement is something I look forward to, and He will crush all oppressors at that time.  I look forward to Him removing all evil from those who oppress me, but I don't want to look forward to the crushing of my fellow man.  For I too have oppressed at times.  So the waiting of the Father to send Jesus back to close the book of this age is indeed merciful, though we long for it.

These are just my thoughts for the morning.  Anyone else want to chime in?
