Shaun Groves - White Flag

By daniel | December 27, 2005

Ok, I've got several CDs laying around to review, so I'd better get started!

Shaun Groves' latest is White Flag.  It has a lot going for it, and overall, I really enjoyed it.  Here's the breakdown:

Technical:  From a mixing and production standpoint, this CD is fabulous.  I also like the cover art!

Artistic:  I think the musical style in the CD is a little immature for the content presented.  Just popping in the CD and listening to the first track gives the impression the CD is aimed at a younger audience than I think would benefit from what the CD has to offer.  So on several songs, I kindof had to overlook the fact that it was of a younger genre/style than I'm used to.  This is fine, though.  Kindof fun on a few songs.

Content:  There was a sweeping theme on this album.  Two, in fact.  The first theme I pick up on in this album is that of the 'Broken World.'  I counted 6 songs that carry that theme.  It does make for a pretty dark album, but I certainly won't hold that against it, as the world is, in fact, broken.  The second theme I'll call 'Have Mercy,' and it really is just a cry to the Lord to have mercy on those of us who are here in this broken world.  Very tightly put together.  The album ends on several high notes resolving the darker issues of the two themes.
