The Glory of a Humble Life

By daniel | March 7, 2006

I've just been reading today I Thess. 4:10b-12.  Let me quote it here:  Grow more and more in your love for one another, and seek to live a quiet life, attending to your own business, and working with your hands, as we said before, so that you can walk properly toward the lost, and not be lacking anything.

I find this comforting.  Sometimes I look at where God has placed others around me, and I think that their lot in the kingdom is more glorious than my own.  Maybe they are a famous singer or a missionary to the jungle somewhere.  This is obviously a discontented spirit that seeks glory for myself — this seems obvious to me.  But two things have helped me in this area lately.

First, Jesus doesn't want me comparing what he has for me with what He has for another brother or sister.  Listen to Jesus's words to Peter regarding John:  If I want for him (John) to stay until I return, what is it to you?  You follow me.  This gets right to the point, doesn't it?  And though maybe even sharp, sometimes it helps me to hear a voice so plain and instructive, that I might just snap out of it and go about following Jesus instead.

Second, the story isn't all about me.  The story of God's redemption of the world is a tad bigger than where Brother Daniel goes or what he does.  If he wants me to do something, anything, then there is no greater plow to put my hand to than that one. I will not put a condition on my role, be it for an assignment comfortable enough, or for one that is interesting enough.  Heaven forbid.

Thanks for listening!
