What Do You Want

By daniel | March 8, 2006

Jesus' critical question in the gospels, "What do you want," rings with the humility of the Almighty.

On Sunday night, we studied the seven signs of Jesus, as prominently presented by the gospel of John.  Sign number 3, Jesus asks the man by the pool, "Do you want to be well?"  We look at Jesus in order to see who God is, and based on that, God is a what-do-you-want sort.  I think God knows that deep-down, what we want really helps define who we are.

Let's not make the mistake of saying that God is just a yes-man.  But His way with us is so gentle, like a Father.  Teaching, guiding, asking thoughtful questions — these are His way.  He will also use more stern means to chastise or correct, as would any good Father, but seriously, more often than not, what you hear is the 'what do you want' and 'why do you want that' questions.

You know, to some degree, you will achieve what you want, if you truly want it bad enough.  The problem is, we don't typically want what is actually best.  Who, without God's help, really wants the suffering that will cure their soul?  Who really wants to learn to give by sacrificing?
