Biblical Authors Thoughts on Eternity

By daniel | March 16, 2006

I was reading several passages related to the study our local church is doing together, and it was very interesting to me, as well as sheds some light on a question asked in the comments a few days ago.

Job 19:25-27 (The Daniel Paraphrase Version)
I know that my Redeemer is alive, and will some day stand victorious on the earth.  And after this body is destroyed, this I know:  That I will bodily see God, and I will see Him myself, and it will be Him that I see, none other.  Oh, how I long for that day.

The authors of the Old Testament, and also the early Jewish fathers of Christianity both assumed a few things about death and resurrection.  Their timeline seemed to be that once you die, your body will decay, but your soul will descend to Sheol (the grave).  Even here we see that Job expected resurrection.  He didn't know that it would come through Jesus specifically, but he trusted God would find a way (Jesus is that way).  We discussed some of Paul's thoughts on the matter here.
