People of Substance

By daniel | March 17, 2006

I’ve been painting pictures of Egypt
Leaving out what it lacked
The future seems so hard
And I want to go back
But the places that used to fit me
Cannot hold the things I"ve learned
And those roads closed off to me
While my back was turned

I was listening to this song, Painting Pictures of Egypt, yesterday, and had a few thoughts about it. She talks about looking back longingly at the old places she used to be, before some maturing and growing in the Lord.  She wouldn't call right now the promised land, and those old places weren't either, but she doesn't remember them being as hard as it is now.

One key line that really stuck with me was 'the places that used to fit me cannot hold the things I've learned'. I almost want to change it to say, the places that used to fit me cannot hold me anymore. What I've really got in mind is this picture from CS Lewis' The Great Divorce, where upon entering heaven, we are substantial enough to walk through the great grass of heaven. Those who have not learned from the Lord have not gained enough substance to be able to stand in even the grass of heaven.

Lewis pictures it as an issue of transparency. We all start out with very little substance, barely visible because we are so transparent and unsubstantive. As we come into the relationship and knowledge of God, we gain substance, becoming more opaque.

Just my thoughts for a Friday morning.
