Ask Everyonce: Sarah on AIDs in Africa

By daniel | March 27, 2006

This is the first half of a set of four questions asked by Sarah:

1.  What do you think is the cause of AIDS in Africa?

2.  It should be noted that the more “Christian-dominated” countries of Africa have a much higher prevalence of HIV than “Muslim- dominated” countries.  What is your response to this statement and how can it be changed?

Note:  Below are just my answers. The question was intended for everyone's participation.  Please add your thoughts to the comments section.

1.  I've never been to Africa, and I'm not an expert, by any means.  Most reports that I've read indicate that the expansion of the AIDs epidemic in Africa is due to infidelity of heterosexual husbands.  The actual origin of the epidemic is of little value to speculate on at this point.

2.  I think this question is aimed to get a rise/response from the Christian target of the question.  That being said, if it can be assumed that the majority of HIV transfer in Africa is through consensual sexual relations (as opposed to blood transfusions, other health issues, or rape, etc) - then I would venture that these countries are not perhaps as 'dominated' by disciples of Christ as one would have hoped.  One one hand, I do not know that our assumption above is true.  I'm not an expert.  On the other hand, I know that following the teachings of Jesus would lead one far, far away from extramarital sexual relations, and I do think it's rare for monogomous marital sex to generate HIV in either person.   Also, as a side note, unless in some form or fashion, Jesus Christ Himself is seated on the throne of a country, I would hesitate to imply that it is a “Christian” country.
