Ask Everyonce: Sarah on Caste in India
By daniel | March 28, 2006
This is the second half of a set of four questions asked by Sarah:
3. The caste system in India no longer legally exists. What do you think is the reason that it is still prevalant and present?
4. What is a way that this can change?
Note: Below are just my answers. The question was intended for everyone's participation. Please add your thoughts to the comments section.
3. Why would there not be? Corrupt men build systems and governments to extend and maintain their power. It all starts with one man oppressing another, then using that power to further establish his advantage. It all culminates with sprawling systems of oppression that are so entrenched in society, even legal changes cannot reverse the damage. Thos that have the high ground over another do not want to share the top of the hill; this is simple, natural selfishness: the rules of those looking out for themselves. Eliminating the caste system legally only removed the fence surrounding the hill — it didn't change who had the hill or their ability and desire to defend the hill.
