The Da Vinci Code

By daniel | April 24, 2006

The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown, has been the subject of much controversy, especially within the church.  It's not hard to see why, either.  It mixes enough truth with some speculation to sound convincing.  Throw in some conspiracy revolving around church and world history, of which most people know too little, and you may end up with some confused people!

The book was great to read, though.  I thought it was a great conspiracy theory book that belongs right in the middle of the fiction section with Harry Potter and the add-on Star Wars books.

I'll try not to spoil it, but the book circles around a vast conspiracy that the Catholic Church throughout history has lied about the divinity and history of Jesus in order to stay in 'power'.  For those who have read it and are confused, let me just say that the assertions about Jesus and His life that are made by the book are classic (obvious) Gnostic thought, which was written several hundred years afterwards — a rewriting of history, common of Gnostic Gospels, like the recently released Gospel of Judas (which we can talk about later if you want!).  There's more information from the Roman Catholic Church here

So, if you like conspiracy fiction, and won't be thrown off by a fictional alternate history mixed with some truth, OR are even willing to check what you read against the real historical facts, I think this is a fun book to read.  But if you're gonna get sucked into a conspiracy theory that denies the truth of the Gospel, save the drama and skip this one.
