Headline: Churches Unite In Antioch

By daniel | May 5, 2006

What a glorious thing to see in a news headline!  And I know these people!  Check out the news cast here: Churches Unite In Antioch

Antioch, Tennessee is perhaps the most diverse of any neighborhood in Nashville, but, neighbors hope the power of prayer will bring people from different walks of life and different cultures together.

Thursday, neighbors, pastors and city leaders came together to ask for divine intervention.  This is the first time Antioch has ever held a National Day of Prayer Event.

Most years, the day passes with people in the community attending other prayer services or none at all.  But this year, because of concerns in Antioch, pastors of the different denominations did something they had never done before. They got together.

Despite theological differences, Baptists, Methodists, Churches of Christ and Presbyterians met in one place, and prayed together for their community and for each other.

In recent years, the established denominations in Antioch have been joined by Hispanic, Laotian and Ethiopian congregations. This community of transition has also become too familiar with crime and gangs.

Even if God doesn't answer their prayers Thursday, they hope the National Day of Prayer will make a difference.  “Even if for some reason God didn't intervene, just the act of unifying, God will work through us by us coming together,” said Reverend Jay Voorhees.

Antioch is a community without a Chamber of Commerce or any other community organization that brings all of these people together.  The pastors of the churches represented said they hope to be that unifying organization that others may turn to, to make Antioch a better place to live.
