How Plants Grow
By daniel | June 7, 2006
This may seem anticlimactic after not posting for so long, but I've been thinking lately about how plants grow. I've got some plants, and I want them to grow. They're very small now, and I want them to be bigger. But I can't make them grow. All I can do is make sure they get plenty of light, only as much water as necessary, and only as much fertilizer as is helpful. If I want them to grow too badly, I end up watering them too much (which kills the roots), or fertilizing them too much (which… kills the roots). This hurried pace simply kills the plants. All I can do is set them in a position to grow. They must do the growing on their own, and only every so often do I actually notice the progress.
Same-same with people, I think, and this is what I'm actually thinking about lately. I can't become super-Spiritual-man overnight. I'm not going to wake up tomorrow and turn every cheek and bless in return for every curse. But maybe I'll hold my tongue once tomorrow when I wouldn't have today.
It's important not to confuse this with being in the Spirit, though. I think spiritual maturity could really be described as one's propensity to follow the leading of the Spirit regularly. An immature person is irregular and sporadic in their listening and following the Spirit, while a more mature person's life vibrates to the tune of the Spirit as a defining characteristic.
So, I guess the 'so what' of this post is just for me to be patient with myself, and set myself up with some consistent exposure to light, with just enough water and fertilizer.
