Reading the Books

By daniel | August 29, 2006

You may have noticed lately the lack of book reviews on here.  There's a reason for this, and that reason is that I haven't read many books lately.

I really do feel like I want to read some new, exciting, make-you-think sort of books.  But I've noticed a problem.  The problem is that I tend to read a book on humility and think of myself slightly more humble for having read the book.  I tend to read a book on following Jesus and feel like I'm following Jesus more closely because I read a book about it.  True, Jesus may ask me to read a book, I'm not saying that he wouldn't, but let me clear this up for myself and everyone else — the actual book reading is not the actual spiritual growth.  I seem to get confused about that.  The actual growth is the practicing of love and faith and obedience and humility.  The actual growth in my relationship with Jesus is in the prayer and the meditiation on His Word, not in reading other's thoughts about prayer or His Word.

Since I'm actually speaking through a blog, I think it's appropriate to mention that you, the reader, and not more spiritual for having read my words.  I do hope, though, that my words can encourage you to engage the community and the Word and Jesus Himself.  If my words can encourage that in you, then they have truly been effective.

So, anyway, I'm taking a hiatus from the spiritual books for a little bit, until I sense it's safe to do so again.  I'm trying to learn to grow simply off of the Word, fellowship, and prayer.
