This summer, avoid burning
with the power of the Son.
Is it just me, or does this sort of church sign take things the wrong direction? Is the very best advertisement about following Jesus that you will not end up in eternal lostness and death and in hell?
When people try to sell something, they put the best thing about it out where everyone can see it. For example, "Buy our computer, it has 4Gb of RAM and a 1Tb hard disk!" Or, "Our new SUV makes you look rich for only half the price, and gets 60 mpg!" Or, "This cleaning product can take out the toughest household stains without any scrubbing!"
So when I see a church "marketing" Jesus, I at least like to see that they're making him look good. These types of signs look like advertisements for caskets. "When you die, be sure that it'll be nice for you afterwards. All you need to do is pray this prayer and go to church on Sundays." Wow. I don't think I intended to be that harsh, but I really think that's how it ends up sounding.
Brothers and sisters, in following Christ, we have much more than a guaranteed non-hell-after-death clause. So much more! Hell is the place where useless things are cast away and burnt, for they are no longer useful in any form or fashion. Hell is the place for traitors who cannot contribute to the kingdom for having denied the king so long they cannot but continue. Hell is the place where you end up if you just keep wandering on your own, lost.
Jesus and his Way are changing us day by day into not only marginally useful people, but in fact, people who look and are just like Jesus himself, the King. These people we are becoming are exceedingly useful in every task they put their hands to. They contribute to the King from a loving and loyal heart, and are seen to him as priceless treasures. And of course they would not 'end up' in the place for lost and irretreivable things and people, for they have been following the Way and the Guide to wherever he may lead, changing the entire world for good as we go.
"This summer, start becoming more than you are with Jesus!" Yay!
"This summer, declare loyalty to the true King of All!" Yay!
"This summer, use Sonscreen to protect yourself." Not so much…
